It’s Tax Freedom Day in Wisconsin, which is marked each year as the day where taxpayers have earned enough to cover their tax burden.

This year, Tax Freedom Day is coming a day earlier than it did in 2009. However, Wisconsin is still three days over the national average.

State Senator Neal Kedzie (R-Elkhorn) says about 27-percent of our annual income goes to support government spending.

Kedzie says meeting out burden earlier in the year will require major changes in government spending. He says the Legislature can help make that happen by making sure Wisconsin’s budget is balanced and ending accounting tricks that push off debt to the next budget biennium.

Kedzie says the state should also work to prevent the “retirement drain,” where retired workers leave the state because they worry about high taxes on their reduced income.
