A Caledonia woman is facing 85 misdemeanor counts of intentionally mistreating animals and one charge of operating a shelter without a license, after prosecutors say she kept dozens of dogs and cats in deplorable conditions.
Racine County District Attorney Rich Chiapete says the complaint against Debra Gray could have contained even more charges, but they eventually settled on one count for almost every animal she had in her possession. Officials seized 81 dogs, 10 cats, and two pigs last week from a no-kill shelter operated by Gray.
The Wisconsin Humane Society has set up a temporary shelter and other care for the animals, many of which are suffering from a wide range of medical issues related to the conditions they were living in. Gray is due back in court next month.
