State public health veterinarian Jim Kazmierczack says some states have a low prevalence of Lyme disease. But, with our huge deer herd, Wisconsin has plenty of cases of Lyme disease, and the deer ticks that spread it are in turn getting spread across the state. And, a Lyme disease vaccine has been withdrawn from the market. So, know the signs and symptoms of Lyme disease, apply tick repellent, and check yourself for ticks, especially during the summer months. Kazmierczack says it takes 24 hours for an infected deer tick to pass the disease on to a human host, so check yourself and other family members after outdoor activities. Let's just say that the family that checks for ticks together, sticks together.
