A Canadian cheese company is going to shut down four plants, including one in Wisconsin.

Saputo says it’s closing its plant in New London, along with a facility in Maryland and two in Canada. About 180 people work at the four plants, with 67 workers at the New London facility alone. Some of the workers will be offered a job at a different location, while others will receive severance packages.

A Saputo spokeswoman says the decision to close the plants was a last resort. The facilities are aging and it would not be cost efficient to upgrade them to current standards. She says the closures will also free up some money to made upgrades at some of the plants that will keep running.

The company has 10 Wisconsin locations, including plants in Green Bay, Black Creek, and Fond du Lac, along with a distribution center in Appleton.
