Racine Police are investigating the death of a child who was run over Saturday afternoon in the driveway of a Racine home. Racine Police Sergeant Jessie Metoyer says the 5 year old girl from Kenosha had arrived to attend a party just as a 16 year old began backing his family’s Chrysler van out of the driveway.
The girl was first struck by the passenger side corner of the van, knocking her to the ground. She was then run over. The teen said he didn’t know he had hit anything, but heard people shouting at him so he pulled forward and ran over the child again.
The girl was conscious when officers and rescue personnel arrived, however, she later died at Wheaton Franciscan Hospital from her injuries. Metoyer says while the investigation into the incident continues, it appears to have been a tragic accident and the steep pitch of the driveway was a contributing factor.
