Republican U.S. Senate candidate Tommy Thompson got some campaign help Wednesday from a big name with the national GOP. New Jersey Governor Chris Christie was in Green Bay, where he told a room full of Thompson supporters that the former governor is the right person to represent the state in Washington.
Christie says Thompson’s time as Wisconsin’s governor show he is a proven fighter who will do the right thing, rather than avoid making unpopular decisions. Christie says Thompson will also be able to walk into the Senate and command the respect of other members, given his long history in government.

The New Jersey governor was last in Wisconsin just before the recall election against Governor Scott Walker. During that stop, he called on Republicans to get out and help rally voters. Christie made a similar appeal during the Thompson fundraiser. He told the crowd of about 150 supporters that the election will be won by “people on the ground who want to make a difference,” and urged them to get their friends and family members out to the polls.
Thompson faces Democratic nominee Tammy Baldwin in the November election.
