An effort is underway to bring the Wisconsin State Christmas Tree back to the Capitol.
State Representative Marlin Schneider (D-Wisconsin Rapids) wants to restore the title of "Christmas Tree" to what's currently known as the "holiday tree" in the Capitol rotunda. Michael Schoenfield, a legislative aid for Schneider, says to call the tree something else demeans those it is a symbol for. Schneider has introduced a resolution to make the change.
Annie Laurie Gaylor with the Madison-based Freedom From Religion Foundation says it's not necessary. She says it's just jumping on the bandwagon for the phony "War on Christmas" that has been identified by Conservatives. Gaylor says labeling it a Christmas Tree insults the many non-Christians living in Wisconsin.
The proposal will receive a Capitol hearing later this week.
