You may soon be fined in Madison, if you throw away clean plastic bags. There's a proposal this week to fine those who toss clean plastic bags. It's expected today from Madison's Mayor Dave Cieslewicz and Alderwoman Judy Compton, because the bags are littering our roads and lakes. If this is approved, fines could reach up to $400 for repeat offenders, although city recycling coordinator George Dreckman says the goal is to rely more on cooperation, than enforcement. The city is also considering drop off sites for clean plastic bags, at a cost of about $24,000.
