Milwaukee Democrat, state Senator Spencer Coggs , wants to make private party gun sales subject to the same criminal background checks as sales by gun dealers. The bill would require private buyers and sellers to go to a gun store for a background check. There would be a small fee for the firearms dealer.
Cogg's says his Responsible Gun Ownership Bill is a response to epidemic gun violence in Milwaukee, with both buyers and sellers in such transactions liable for criminal charges if they fail to get a background check. Coggs says his bill will get a committee hearing in the Democrat controlled state Senate; a similar measure went nowhere under GOP control last session.
