The answer, to a decades old Jefferson County cold case may be found in an empty Janesville residential lot. Rock County Sheriff’s Captain Todd Christiansen said several local law enforcement agencies are meticulously sifting through dirt for the remains of an eight year-old girl. Georgia Jean Weckler of rural Fort Atkinson went missing on May 1st, 1947. “At the time, this area was out in the county, and currently it’s in the city of Janesville,” said Christianson.
Chrsitiansen said cadaver dogs have indicated the likely presence of a body. “We haven’t located anything, but our dig has just started,” Christianson said. “It’s a fairly large area. We’ve got to remove the dirt, sift through it, take it to a different area, and then go back to get more dirt.” Detectives from the Janeville Police Department and the sheriff’s department cleared brush over the weekend. Excavation began Monday at the site near North Wright Road and East Rotamer Road.
