The DOT is preparing Wisconsin for the new Real ID law.

It's a mandate from the federal government to help thwart terrorism through improved identification. However, it's taken more than three years to implement.

Patrick Fernan, Operations Director for the state DOT, says the system will require those renewing their drivers license to also provide their birth certificate or passport to prove US citizenship. Fernan told a Legislative committee on Wednesday that they're working on possible complications with the system, such as individuals who may have trouble accessing those documents. However, he doesn't think it will be a big change for most people.

Fernan says the DOT hopes to begin mailing out Real ID compliance cards by December of 2009.
