A bill headed to the Governor’s desk would limit attorney fees in lawsuits. State Rep. Robin Vos says he wrote it after a constituent paid ten times the amount of his damage settlement in attorney fees.
Milwaukee lawyer Vince Megna was involved in the case against that car dealer. Turns out Vos was also involved in a case of tenants suing him as their former landlord. Megna says it was “morally wrong” for the Republican lawmaker to not disclose that case.
Megna filed an ethics complaint with the Wisconsin Government Accountability Board Thursday. But the GAB said Vos did not violate the ethics code. The Board said that because Vos is part of a larger group, the legislative body, and the bill applies to such a large group of people and/or businesses.
The measure passed the Assembly as part of a marathon overnight session.
Megna, who calls the legislation “anti-consumer,” is not optimistic the Governor will veto it.
