A computer breach has been uncovered at UW Parkside in Kenosha that could affect the security of students’ personal identification information.

Malware was discovered on one computer server March 16th during routine maintenance. Steps were taken were remove the malware and track down the source, however it has not been determined who gained access to the system.

Affected students are being notified of the breach and officials are urging them to take steps to protect their identity and to monitor their credit reports and financial statements.

Parkside spokesman John Mielke says investigator did not find evidence that the hacker’s motive was identity theft and so far there has been no sign that anyone has tried to download names or Social Security numbers.

The breach affects students who were admitted or enrolled at Parkside since the fall of 2010. They are being notified by e-mail and by U.S. mail at their last known address.
