What could be the largest dairy farm in the state is expected to have minimal impact on groundwater in Fond du Lac County.
The Rosendale Dairy plans to have 8,000 dairy animals and 300 beef steers by 2010. The operation will reach that count in two phases with half in place by the end of this year.
County Land Conservationist Lynn Mathias says some neighbors are concerned especially with plans to land spread manure over nearly 3,850 acres of cropland. However he says if the owners follow the manure management plan they've submitted to the DNR there shouldn't be any groundwater quality problems. The DNR has determined that the project won't have any significant adverse environmental impact.
Mathias says it's natural that there are concerns about an operation that large. However, he says the owners and operators of the farm are expected to be good stewards of the land. Still, He says they will keep a watchful eye on the operation.
