A 12-year-old Waukesha girl is getting better, after she was stabbed 19 times in an apparent fictional horror ritual. Officials at Waukesha Memorial Hospital said this morning that the girl has improved to fair condition, after previously being described as critical but stable.

Authorities say the girl, whose identity has not been released, was stabbed throughout her body Saturday in a wooded area by two of her 12-year-old classmates from a Waukesha middle school. Police reports indicate her wounds were near fatal, with multiple organs hit and one of the knife strikes coming millimeters away from hitting a major artery.

The girl was found by a cyclist, after her attackers left the area and she managed to crawl out of the woods.

The two girls arrested for the stabbing told authorities they planned the killing for months as a way of showing allegiance to the fictional Slender Man, a character featured in horror stories and other media posted online. One of the girls reportedly told officers that a person must kill to show dedication to Slender Man, and to prove themselves worthy of him.

Both girls have been charged as adults with attempted homicide. They are due back in court next week.
