The state’s consumer protection agency is warning people to keep an eye on the cash register, if they buy anything during American TV and Appliance’s going out of business sale.
State Division of Consumer Protection Administrator Sandy Chalmers says they found overcharges at all but one of the company’s seven Wisconsin stores, when inspectors visited them this past Monday. The largest overcharge was for more than $300 at the company’s smaller store on Casaloma Drive in Grand Chute.
Chalmers says it’s a reminder that consumers should pay close attention to the prices items ring up for when checking out. She also suggests that shoppers notify the store right away about any errors and ask questions before they pay. State law requires stores to charge consumers the lowest advertised price.
American says no customers have complained to them about being overcharged during the sale, as the company works on closing down its 11 stores in three states after 60 years in business. The company says the check-out errors discovered by the state were for unboxed items offered for less than the same items in boxes, and the stores’ policy has always been to mark down demo and clearance items at the registers.
