About 200 students and the media showed up last night for a controversial UW-Madison lecturer's first day of class.

In some ways Kevin Barrett's first lecture was typical. After 30-minutes students started daydreaming. Some even dozed off. But Barrett's controversial conspiracy theory that 9-11 was orchestrated by the US government was more for the media's appetite.

Barrett says he's not teaching a class on September 11th. He'd like to but he says that's not what he was hired to do. Although Barrett says it will come up in a couple of weeks and will be featured for only a week.

But Barrett says while 9-11 may be a huge part of contemporary history, when you put it into historic perspective of Islam itself it will only be a small chapter in history books.

Some of the students came to class surprised by all the media attention. They had no idea some people want Barrett fired or why.
