Grisly details about the death of Britney Cross were revealed at Monday’s court hearing for the 28-year-old Janesville man charged with killing her.
At Clayton Courtney’s preliminary hearing in Rock County Court, Janesville Police Detective Mark Johnson testified that he was present for the 21-year-old Edgerton woman’s autopsy. He said Cross sustained “numerous skull fractures,” and that mud, dirt and a small rock were found in her stomach, evidence of a struggle.
Johnson said mud and DNA linking Courtney to the crime scence were found on the suspect’s clothing and – most tellingly – a pocket New Testament with Courtney’s name on it was found near the body.
A court commissioner found enough evidence to move forward and bound Courtney over for trial. His arraignment is set for August 6th, and he remains jailed on a $500,000 cash bond.
