The use of credit cards just may be one of the reasons the Salvation Army kettle drive in Fond du Lac is in danger of failing to meet its goal. Many shoppers have made a habit over the years of dropping their loose change in the red kettles, but considering consumers are doing away with cash in favor of the convenience of credit cards for their purchases, there is simply less loose change to share.

The problem is not unique to Fond du Lac. The Salvation Army says it has a donation goal of $156,000 during this Christmas season, yet less than half of that total – $73,000 – has been raised in Fond du Lac as of now. A spokesperson says the organization is usually at 70 to 80 percent of its goal at this time in the season.
