Sen. Tim Cullen

Open heart surgery for a Wisconsin legislator. State Senator Tim Cullen underwent successful open heart/valve replacement surgery on December 5 at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. The Janesville Democrat is recovering at home and fully expects to return for the January legislative session. A statement from his office says Cullen will miss Thursday’s special session.

His surgery was not an emergency procedure. Cullen had been aware of the problems since his annual checkup in April 2013. Cullen said he felt his heart health was fine and that he had not experienced any symptoms at any time. He had attempted to deal with the problem with medication starting in April until his doctor told him he needed surgery so the condition did not worsen.
