The Janesville School Board will hear more Tuesday night about a proposed crackdown on swearing in hallways, as part of a discussion of core values. Commissioner Bill Sodemann wants clarification of things "you shouldn't do," an issue he says is not addressed in the district's existing language policy. He wants elements such as respect emphasized and student discussions to "reflect proper values."

The School Board member says his presentation to the board won't change policy but he hopes it will bring greater enforcement by principals and teachers. He concurs with consultants who've said what the school district permits it promotes. By looking the other way it creates an environment in which kids think cussing is okay.

There is no "magic list" of words banned from school hallways.
