Fond du Lac County District Attorney said no matter what statement he issues on the investigation into the fatal shooting of a Fond du Lac police officer, it won’t quell rumors surrounding the incident. Dan Kaminsky said his role is to decide if the use of force by officers was appropriate and provide more details about the incident. Rumors persist that the standoff with the shooter James Cruckson may have been prompted by an officer’s involvement with Cruckson’s girlfriend. Kaminsky said evidence he’s been privy to doesn’t support that type of speculation. “The big rumor about officers being involved with this particular victim, the evidence that I’ve seen is that it’s totally unrelated,” he said. “I’m certain that no matter what I say, and no matter what the facts of the matter are, those rumors will persist, unfortunately.”
Fond du Lac Police Officer Craig Birkholz was killed and Officer Ryan Williams and his K-9 partner Grendel were critically wounded in the March 20th shooting. Kaminsky said Officer Birkholz was a hero and although Cruckson had some issues, he also had a family that loved him. Cruckson, took his own life during the incident. Kaminsky said it could take up to 60 days before he issues his decision on the shooting now that he’s received the state Justice Department’s files on the investigation.
