Time is running out for victims of the August floods to register for federal disaster aid.

Residents of the 14 counties that were declared disaster areas have until this Thursday to apply for federal aid. Wisconsin Emergency Management's Lori Getter says those that fail to register by October 25th will be unable to ask for federal help if they discover flood damage later on.

Getter says getting in the system now ensures that if damage shows up later or insurance denies your claim, you can still apply for help. She says many people may have avoided registering because they think insurance will pay for damages from the flooding, which occurred between August 18th and 31st. However, they could find out their insurance won't cover the damage and be left without any options for assistance if they don't register.

Over 4,800 people have already registered for federal aid, although many more may qualify. More than $12 million in grants have already been awarded to flood victims.

Residents in the disaster areas can register with FEMA online or by calling 1-800-621-FEMA.
