If you get a letter in the mail offering to obtain a property deed for just $69.50, you might want to just throw it away. That advice from the Department of Consumer Protection, which says getting a copy of your deed shouldn't cost that much money. Investigator Ed Walker says state law caps the maximum amount your County Register of Deeds can charge for a copy of your deed, so you can usually get the document on your own for under four dollars.

Walker says they've been getting a number of complaints recently from across the state in recent weeks about the mailings from National Deed Service Inc. Walker says there's nothing illegal about what the company is doing, but consumers should know the service doesn't cost that much money.

Most of the complaints are coming from larger metropolitan areas. Walker says the effort seems to be paying off for the company, after several Brown County residents paid for the service.
