A deer raised on a northern Wisconsin hunting preserve has tested positive for chronic wasting disease.
State Veterinarian Paul McGraw says the 3-year-old buck was in a herd of roughly 425 deer on a 570 acre preserve in Oneida County. The animal was born on the premises and shot in the preserve.
The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture said the business can continue to conduct hunts on the quarantined preserve, noting that properly handled dead animals leaving the premises do not pose a disease risk.
CWD was first discovered in Wisconsin in 2002 and white-tailed deer in more than three dozen counties have since tested positive for the disease.
