Dane County’s sheriff says a man killed by deputies this week apparently wanted to die. The Stoughton-area man shot and killed by deputies this week had a death wish. Dane County Sheriff Dave Mahoney said Friday that 42 year-old William Sorenson indicated as much shortly before he confronted officers called to a domestic dispute. “The deceased had made a call to a friend, indicating that he was armed with a shotgun, that he was in the garage, and that he intended to die,” said Mahoney. Mahoney says Sorenson came at deputies armed with a shotgun. They fired a non-lethal bean-bag round which failed to stop Sorenson, and he opened fire. Officers then returned fire, killing Sorenson.

Mahoney says he’s confident deputies took proper action. The Sheriff says it’s been a tough period for deputies, but their training has paid off. “The public expects a hundred and twenty percent when deputies respond to calls for service,” says Mahoney. “That’s what’s occurred in every one of these incidents over the past two weeks.” Last week, deputies shot and killed a McFarland man who had fired at them. And earlier this month a Stoughton man shot and killed himself when police tried to arrest him for reckless driving.
