Wisconsin Democrats are gathering this weekend for their annual state convention.

They'll be meeting in Stevens Point this weekend, where state party Chairman Joe Wineke says the main goal is to build unity, following a rough presidential primary season. Wineke says everybody needs to understand that the state, country, and world can't take another four years of what's currently happening in Washington..

Governor Doyle will be the keynote speaker of the convention. He's appearing on behalf presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama, who will not be stopping by. Wineke says Obama is currently on a two week speaking tour focused on economics, and a partisan political convention doesn't really fit with that goal.

Aside from presidential politics, Wineke says the party has many important state races to focus on for next fall. Democrats hope to retain control of the state Senate and grab the majority in the Assembly.

The convention runs through Saturday afternoon.
