Wisconsin's constitutional ban against gay marriage will likely remain on the books for some time, despite Democrats taking control of the Legislature.
State Representative Mark Pocan of Madison, who is openly gay, says it's a lot of work to put something into the Constitution and to take it out again. Instead, he says lawmakers should focus on passing measures that can offer more rights for gay couples.
Pocan says he'd like to see the Legislature give gay couples legal protections covering health insurance, inheritance, and hospital visitation rights.
