A Republican state lawmaker says Assembly Democrats don’t have the votes to override a veto by their governor. Assembly Democrats will need Republican support, in order to override Governor Jim Doyle’s veto of a bill which would allow the Natural Resources Board to appoint the Secretary of the Department of Natural Resources.

“Right now the makeup of the Natural Resources Board is concerning to a lot of us, and really not dealing with issues in the best interest of the sports men and women of Wisconsin,” said Representative Scott Gunderson, who’s been urging his GOP colleagues to sustain the veto. Gunderson has said specifically that the Natural Resources Board is not looking out for the interests of hunters, anglers and trappers. And he said the votes aren’t there to override Doyle, even if some Republicans are on board. “There will definitely be more Democrats coming on board to vote against the override, than there will be Republicans voting for the override,” Gunderson said.
