With a state budget now two months overdue, a compromise is sought that might help UW students. After weeks of deadlock, state Rep. Joe Parisi says stalled budget negotiations are leaving some 4700 UW students hanging — they don't know whether or not they'll get tuition grants. "We see a lot of games being played in the state Capitol," Parisi said Thursday on the UW Madison campus. "There are young people who will have to leave school, if this (budget) impasse is not broken." Parisi and fellow Madison Democrat, Rep. Spencer Black, want Assembly budget negotiators to pledge their support for adequate funding to provide the grants. That amount, $46,830,700, is more than that contained in the Assembly version of the budget, but less than in the Senate version. Classes on UW campuses began this week, and tuition bills will come due soon. Parisi and Black, along with several other Dane County Assembly Democrats, sent a letter to Assembly leaders on the budget conference committee.
