Before you start digging in your yard for spring projects, give Digger’s Hotline a call to keep yourself safe. All you have to do is call 811. It’s a free service from your local utilities that will mark out where underground lines and wires are.

Wisconsin Public Service spokesperson Kelly Zagrebski says there’s plenty of things just under the surface of your yard you need to be careful of. “It could be electric, gas, cable, phone.” Crews will have your property marked out within three days.

Zagrebski says neglecting to call before you dig could lead to fines if you do hit a line. “It is a state law, and more importantly it’s the right thing to do. It keeps you safe, and makes sure that your projects go forward successfully.”

WPS responds to more than 400 cases of damaged lines and wires year year.
