DMV service centers across Wisconsin will be closed this coming Friday.

Employees at all state agencies are required to take eight unpaid furlough days over the next two years. DMV Operations Manager Patrick Fernan says they'll be carrying out the first of those at the end of the week, with all employees taking the day off.

Fernan says officials decided it was be less of an inconvenience to close all centers at the same time, rather than making facilities run with less staff as they attempt to spread the furlough time around. He says that could have resulted in longer wait times for customers.

Despite the closing of centers for the day, many automated services will still be available. License holders will still be able to renew registrations online and schedule skills tests.

The next closure due to furloughs will be the Friday before Labor Day.
