Just as many anglers are getting ready to head out for the holiday weekend, state officials are raising bag limits for walleye on several lakes.
The state Department of Natural Resources says daily walleye bag limits will increase today on 447 lakes in northern Wisconsin. Bag limits on 269 lakes will jump to five per day, 171 will go up to three per day, and seven lakes will see the limit go up to two per day.
The move comes after Chippewa Indians speared less than half of their walleye quota on lakes in their ceded treaty rights’ territory. The tribes speared over 27,000 walleye this spring, which is about 2,500 below average.
The DNR is also urging anglers to download a new mobile app, which includes current information on bag limits and state regulations for fishing.
