The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has closed a popular but problem plagued parcel along the Wisconsin River in northern Dane County.

Mazomanie Beach — commonly known as Mazo Beach — is located in in the Lower Wisconsin State Waterway about 6 miles southwest of Sauk City.

Ongoing issues with public sex acts and drug use prompted the agency to close the 140 acre site on Wednesday until further notice, pending redevelopment.

“Those types of activities discourage public participation at that property, and that’s something we’re looking to change,” said Brian Hefty, DNR natural resources area supervisor.

Ongoing updates to the  Riverway master plan will gather public feedback and take steps to redevelop the Mazo Beach area to provide a range of recreational opportunities to a broad group of citizens.
