The Milwaukee County Board has given their green light for a greener version of a local landmark. On Thursday, the board approved a $550,000 private donation by the Greater Milwaukee Foundation to help modernize the Mitchell Park domes lighting system. Sandy Folaron, Director of the Mitchell Park Domes, says, "We're pleased that we now look at any kind of initiative that happens here at the conservatory in terms of energy efficiency and sustainability." The lighting renovation involves adding programmable Light Emitting Diode technology (LEDs). These are efficient and will last longer than the park's current fluorescent and 60 watt bulbs.

Folaron says with art exhibits, along with rotating floral shows, the lighting is just the latest modern twist to the more than 40-year-old conservatory.

The domes will be closed for renovations from June 22nd until late September.
