Candidates for governor continue their war of words over stem cells.
At a Madison even dubbed “Stem Cell Champions for Doyle,” the governor repeated his claim, that Republican Congressman Mark Green would cripple stem cell research in Wisconsin, if he were elected governor. Doyle cited Green's support of President Bush's veto of federal funding. “His vote to support President Bush is basically choking off stem cell research,” said Doyle. “That's the purpose of it. And we're not talking about therapeutic cloning or anything, we're talking about basic stem cell research.” Doyle said Green has not only voted to limit funding, but has also voted for criminal penalties for stem cell research.
But Green says Doyle is distorting his record. “The votes that Jim Doyle uses in his TV ads are cloning votes,” said Green. “And there's an honest difference. I don't support cloning human beings. I do not think that we should create life for the sole purpose of destroying it.”
