Rising energy prices and growing concerns about global warming may have Governor Jim Doyle rethinking his opposition to building new nuclear power plants in Wisconsin.

The Governor's Task Force on Global Warming recently recommended the state at least explore the option of building a new nuclear reactor in Wisconsin. Governor Doyle says the recommendation was a responsible way to allow the state to at least consider the option.

Wisconsin has had a moratorium in place on new nuclear power plant construction or planning since 1983. Efforts to repeal it failed during the most recent Legislative session . The Task Force does not advocate eliminating the measure, but easing restrictions to give the Public Service Commission room to explore nuclear power.

Previously, Doyle had said no new nuclear power plant would move forward while he is Governor. He still doubts Wisconsin will lead the way on the issue. However, if another state does build a new reactor, Doyle thinks it will lead to more interest in Wisconsin.
