Governor Jim Doyle wants Wisconsin to help protect the Great Lakes. It's now been two years since Governors and Premiers of Great Lakes states and provinces signed on to the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence River Basin Water Resources Compact . Doyle calls the compact "an incredible visionary step forward," with states and provinces working together to protect the lakes against water diversions. But before that kind of unified cooperation can take place, each state and province must ratify the compact. In Wisconsin, the legislative committee charged with doing that stopped work back in September. Doyle notes that the question of diverting Great Lakes water to the dessert southwest has already come up in the presidential campaign.
