Wisconsin’s governor is not getting involved in the Arizona lawsuit.

As the federal government sues Arizona against its new immigration law, some folks are stepping up to defend it — but not Wisconsin. Attorney General JB Van Hollen has asked Governor Jim Doyle’s permission to sign on to a legal brief in support of Arizona, but Doyle has denied that request. Doyle Spokesperson Adam Collins explains. “Because it’s very obviously a political stunt.” He says, “The suit would just be really a waste of taxpayer dollars.”

The latest to file a legal brief in support of Arizona’s immigration law is Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox, who is asking other state attorneys general to join him in that brief. The Obama Administration argues that immigration is a federal issue. However, supporters of Arizona say Congress is not doing enough about illegal immigration. The Arizona law takes effect July 29.
