Keep working, and compromise. That challenge from Governor Jim Doyle to lawmakers considering ethics reform. With an apparent rift developing between leaders in the Senate and Assembly, the governor says he's concerned about the potential for compromise on the ethics bill for which he called a special session.

Most important, says Doyle, is creation of a nonpartisan government accountability board that's not dependent on the legislature for financing. Asked when he'd like to see a bill ready for his signature, Doyle says the day of his State of the State Address would be good; that's next Tuesday. Putting reform off for a few weeks means it won't get done, says Doyle, which is why he put this process on a tight time frame.
