Tuesday's primary reduced the field from five candidates to two for State Superintendent of Public Instruction; Tony Evers and Rose Fernandez.

Evers, the current Deputy Superintendent at the Department, says his experience will set him apart in the coming months. He says his work in public schools over the past 34 years will be essential to rallying support around causes important to education.

Evers says education funding and increasing graduation rates are some of the areas he's like to focus on, if elected.

Fernandez, an advocate for virtual school programs, admits Evers does have more experience. However, she says that experience is in bowing to special interest groups and ignoring innovations that would help advance public education. Fernandez says she would bring an outside perspective to DPI that's needed to advance education.

Both candidates advance to April's General Election.
