The Department of Workforce Development is calling on the federal government to help re-train displaced workers at the Janesville General Motors plant.

DWD is asking for $3.8 million in federal grant money to help nearly 800 workers who will be displaced by the elimination of the second shift at the G-M plant. Deputy Secretary JoAnna Richard says the money would be used to re-train those workers for other careers.

Richard says the goal is to place those workers into new jobs in Janesville or surrounding areas.

The grant money would only impact workers from GM and associated businesses who will lose their jobs after the second shift is eliminated. Richard says DWD is still looking at how to assist all employees impacted by plans to close the Janesville GM plant by 2010.
