A beetle that has wiped out ash tree populations in several parts of the country, is now in the heart of Wisconsin’s northwoods.
State Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection spokesman Jim Dick says the emerald ash borer was recently found in a trap in Oneida County, near Rhinelander. The only other EAB infestation in northern Wisconsin is in Douglas County, near Superior.
Dick says it’s unclear how local communities will fight the pest.
There are millions of ash trees in the northwoods. Officials say a widespread infestation could have an impact on the state’s timber industry.
