The state Elections Commission on Tuesday approved a plan to mail postcards to up to 1.5 million Wisconsin residents who have a valid driver’s license or state ID card, but may not be registered to vote. Commission spokesman Reid Magney says the mailing will direct people to a state website to check their status.

The board also approved hiring a call Milwaukee center to field questions about the cards, just in case individuals who receive them feel more comfortable talking to a real person instead of trying to navigate the website.

The mailings are required for Wisconsin to join the Electronic Registration Information Center, a multi-state effort aimed at streamlining the process of keeping voter lists up to date.
