Efforts are underway to remove both the trumpeter swan and the osprey from Wisconsin's endangered and threatened species list.

Sumner Matteson an avian ecologist with the DNR Bureau of Endangered Resources, says the trumpeter swan has recovered very well, particularly in northern counties. He says by 2007, there were 480 trumpeter swan nests statewide.

Matteson says osprey was one of the raptor species decimated by DDT in the early 70's, and there were less than 100 nesting pairs in Wisconsin. Matteson says they have worked closely with partners like transmission companies to install nesting platforms. A public hearing on removing the species from the endangered and threatened list will be held October 20th in Madison.
