Milwaukee 's first female police chief has filed a claim of gender discrimination against the city. The complaint from former chief Nan Hegerty, centers on her salary and the salary of her successor Edward Flynn. As the current police chief, Flynn makes $143,881 annually, an 8.5% increase over what Hegerty made. Flynn's pay was a source of dispute with Milwaukee Aldermen when it voted to raise salaries for the mayor and council members and allow the incoming police chief to be paid any salary below the mayor's pay.
Flynn came to Milwaukee as police commissioner of Springfield , Massachusetts , a $155,000 dollar a year job. Although Hegerty had managerial experience as a U.S. Marshall she possessed no previous experience as a police chief prior to the Milwaukee position.
Hegerty wants the Equal Rights Division of Wisconsin's Department of Workforce Development to examine the case, and determine whether she should've been paid more.
