Night time speed limits on snow mobile riders could be extended for another three years.

Lawmakers passed a 55 mile an hour night time speed limit for snowmobiles during the last session, but it expired over the summer due to a sunset provision.

State Representative Dean Kaufert (R-Neenah) says the one year period didn't provide enough data to see how effective the speed limit was. Snowmobile-related fatalities did decline by about 10 last year, but the Neenah Republican says part of that may have been due to a light season for snow.

Legislation from Kaufert would extend the night time speed limit to 2010, which should provide enough time to see if it's effective. After that, he says lawmakers may consider making it permanent.

The bill receives a hearing at the Capitol later today.
