Lawmakers are looking to get ahead of a disturbing new trend that has seen people have been using a certain type of bath salts to get high.

The bath salts sold in convenience stores and other retail locations contain a synthetic drug called MDPV. State Representative Jeff Stone (R-Greendale) says it can produce a high similar to PCP and LSD, yet remains completely legal.

Stone says the effects of the drug can be quite severe and “extremely ugly.” He’s urging lawmakers to approve a bill that would ban the sale and possession of bath products containing MDPV.

Reported cases of people abusing the bath salts have not yet become prevalent in Wisconsin, but other states have seen use growing. Stone says Wisconsin should act now to restrict their availability, before it becomes a problem in the state.

The bill is being considered by the Assembly Criminal Justice Committee.
