A gay rights group in Wisconsin is reacting to a federal judge’s ruling Wednesday that overturns California’s ban on same-sex marriage. The court struck down that state’s ban saying it violates the rights of same-sex couples. Katie Belanger, Executive Director of Fair Wisconsin, is “very excited” about the decision, “I think it is a signal that things in this country are really moving in the direction and really echoes some of the momentum were seeing at home,” she says.
Belanger says the decision begs the question whether citizens should be able to vote to limit the rights of a minority of people. The group plans on working to repeal Wisconsin’s constitutional amendment outlawing same-sex marriage and civil unions, a ban which Belanger says is “more expansive” than California’s.
Wisconsin voters approved the amendment in a statewide referendum in 2006.
