The family of a murdered UW-Madison student says a DNA match has been made in the case, almost eight years after her death.
Kevin and Jean Zimmermann, the parents of 21-year-old Brittany Zimmermann, made the announcement Tuesday in a statement released to media. They are not naming the person though, due to the ongoing nature of the investigation and the fact that the Dane County district attorney is not prepared to file charges at this time.
Zimmermann was found stabbed to death in her off-campus apartment in downtown Madison in April of 2008.
The Zimmermann’s said the person responsible has been free for nearly eight years and may have spoken to others about the murder. Their hope is going public with the information may get others to come forward with more information. There is still at $40,000 reward available to anyone who provides information in the case that results in an arrest and conviction.
Madison Police Chief Mike Koval released a statement Tuesday, in which he described the case as not being “ripe” for an arrest or referral to prosecutors. Koval declined to comment on the investigation, since it’s still an open case.
